William Russell (Russ) Young was born in 1934 in Nashville, the fourth child of John and Mary (Wright) Young.
He attended Holy Name School, graduated from Father Ryan High School in 1952, and earned a B.A. in English from Vanderbilt University in 1956 on an Army ROTC scholarship. He served in the U.S. Army in the Army Information Services. Russ worked in the financial services industry as a financial advisor with Wiley Bros., Third National Bank, J.C. Bradford and ultimately retired from Hilliard Lyons.
He married Tavia Ellen McKegney in 1956 and they had five children, Cindy Reisz (Nashville), Lauren (Don) Forner (Hugo, MN), Meredith Ormsby (Baltimore, MD), Brian Young (Nashville), and Scott (Emma) Young (Lyons, CO). He loved and was so proud of his children and grandchildren: Collins Reisz, Lindsey Reisz, Taylor Reisz, Thomas Ormsby, Patrick Ormsby, Shiloh Forner, and Keenan Young.
Family was very important to Russ, and he spent hours researching the family genealogy, leaving behind a well-documented family tree of multiple generations. Russ and Tavia, his wife of almost 42 years, were devoted to their children and were heavily involved in their scholastic and athletic endeavors.
He was a member of the Knights of Columbus #544 and coached football at Christ the King School, which all the children attended. He was unhappy with the quality of equipment the team had, so he took it upon himself to raise money for a complete upgrade, including top quality helmets. He then led the team to two championships during his five-year stint.
He was a lifelong golfer and longtime member of Hillwood Country Club, as well as an avid bridge player. After retirement, he moved to Hillwood Condominiums, where he served as president of the board for many years. When he saw a need to be filled, he stepped in. He moved to Park Manor retirement community in 2021 and quickly made friends, becoming a force in the bingo games.
The family would like to thank the staff in the Neuro ICU at Ascension St Thomas West, and Alive Hospice of Nashville for their care of Russ and their support of his family. He did not linger following a stroke but left this world on his own terms.
He is preceded in death by his wives Tavia Ellen (McKegney) Young in 1999, and Cecile (Adams) Young in 2014, his parents, Mary and John Young, and his three siblings, Jean Goad, Elizabeth Jungman, and Pat Young.
He is survived by his five children and seven grandchildren, and numerous nephews, nieces, great-nephews, and great-nieces.
Russ leaves a legacy as a man who always gave his best to his family, friends, and clients. He left this world a better place than he found it and he will be sorely missed.
There will be a gathering of friends and family on Tuesday, April 19, 2022, at Marshall-Donnelly-Combs Funeral Home from 4 pm-8 pm. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10 am on Wednesday, April 20, 2022, at the Cathedral of the Incarnation in Nashville, Tennessee. Interment will follow the mass at Calvary Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Father Ryan High School Endowment Fund or Vanderbilt University.
