John K. Cartwright, Nashville native and retired engineer passed away on January 29th of complications of Parkinson’s disease to be with his Savior.

He was 87 and survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Betsy Mattingly Cartwright, sons John C. Cartwright (Robbie) of Louisville, Colorado, Mark R. Cartwright (Michelle) of Erie, Colorado, daughter Nancy C. Tirrill (W. Bryant Tirrill) of Nashville, granddaughters Elizabeth C. Tirrill and Ann Chapman Tirrill of Nashville.

He was a direct descendant of Robert A. Cartwright, who in 1780 came with Col. John Donelson’s party up the Cumberland River to build Fort Nashboro and found Nashville.

John attended Hillsboro High School and received a Bachelor of Engineering degree from Vanderbilt University, after which he accepted a U.S. Navy commission and began active service. After his naval service, he held a number of engineering positions in Nashville and was a licensed professional engineer and a member of the MENSA Society. He operated a commercial construction company for several years and retired at age 49. He spent many retirement years helping others and was heavily involved in church work and St. Paul Christian Academy. His family home, The Ponderosa, which he built in 1978, will become part of Radnor Lake State Park.
