Jacob Phillip Brust

Jacob Phillip Brust, loving husband, and father, passed away at his home in Nashville, Tennessee on Saturday, January 22, 2022, surrounded by his wife and children. He was under hospice care, following recent pneumonia complications.

Jacob was born on March 16, 1936, in Sullivan, Indiana to the late Jacob Phillip, Sr., and Josephine Stark Brust.

He was baptized at the age of 16 and remained a faithful follower of Christ throughout his life.

He was an active member of the various churches he attended over the years, leading services and participating in youth camps and outreach. He was most recently a member of the Woodson Chapel Church of Christ in Nashville, TN, and was especially interested in serving the homeless in the Nashville area.

Jacob graduated from high school in Shelburn, IN in 1954. He attended Indiana State University in Terre Haute, graduating with a Bachelors in Secondary Education in 1958, and then completed his master’s degree in education. His professional career in education included teaching many subjects including Economics, History, and Typing. He was a middle and high school guidance counselor for the last 20 years of his teaching career.

Jacob lived and worked in southern Indiana until 1993 before a five-year retirement to Newport Richey, Florida. He and his wife relocated to Nashville, TN in 1997 to be closer to their three children. He soon found he missed his social interactions that teaching provided, so he returned to work for Kroger and later Publix. He made many friends during his “retirement career”.

Jacob is survived by his wife of 58 years, Eileen Deardorff Brust, and children, Matthew (Amie) Brust of Brentwood, TN, Darlene (Kevin) Hicks of Floyds Knob, IN, and Douglas Brust of St. Louis, Missouri; 9 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his only sibling and sister, EA (Kenneth) McKinley of Sullivan, Indiana.

A Celebration of life gathering will be held on Saturday, January 29, 2022, at 5:00 p.m. (visitation 3-5 p.m.) at Woodson Chapel Church of Christ, 5800 Edmondson Pike, Nashville, TN, to honor his memory.

In Lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Woodson Chapel Church of Christ, Designated For “Room in the Inn”, 5800 Edmondson Pike, Nashville, TN 37211.
