Vernon Caldwell Payne

Vernon Caldwell Payne, age 92 of Nashville TN, passed away on November 21, 2021.

Preceded in death by parents, Robert and Temple Payne.

Survived by wife, Hazel Payne; son, Robert (Julie) Payne; grandchildren, Britain, Linden, Robert Kline Payne Jr; sister, Rogerlene Hill.

Vernon was born in Nashville and was a graduate of the 1947 Class of Cohn High School, served in the US Army stationed in Stuttgart, Germany during the Korean War. He went on to work for Vanderbilt University, retiring after 44 years of service as Manager of Management Information Systems. He retired so that he could spend an unlimited amount of time with his greatest joy – his two granddaughters, to be joined soon with who he called his ‘favorite’ (and only) grandson. It is said that “Grandpas have ears that truly listen, arms that always hold, love that’s never-ending, and a heart that’s made of gold. To be able to watch your children’s children grow up is truly a blessing from above. A grandfather has the wisdom of long experience and the love of an understanding heart”. Vernon was a true example of all of these characteristics. He was also the best brother, husband, and father anyone could have asked for. He will be truly missed.

Interment with Military Honors at Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Funeral services will be conducted by Rev. J. Tommy Jobe on Saturday, November 27. 2021, at 1:00 p.m. (visitation Saturday 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.) at Woodbine Funeral Home, Hickory Chapel, 5852 Nolensville Road, 615-331-1952.
