At Alive Hospice, Nashville, Tennessee, on Tuesday, July 18, 2023 in his 83rd year, Robert Wilson Duthie passed away.
Son of the late William and Marion Duthie.
Survived by his beloved and supportive wife Mavis Duthie and sons Graham (Cathy) Duthie (Woodbury, MN) and Andrew (Peggy) Duthie (Nashville, TN). Also survived by his grandchildren Maureen, Mark, Michael, and Max.
Bob was born in Toronto, Ontario in 1939.
He graduated from Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario in 1962 with a BSc in Engineering Physics. After graduation, Bob went on to work at Automatic Electric Co. in Brockville, Ontario where, in the late 1960’s, he was one of the proud inventors of the C1-EAX telephone switching system – proud enough to name his first two boats the Seawon and then the Seawon II. Both boats were kept at the Brockville Yacht Club, where Bob was an avid and lifelong member.
Bob later worked at Northern Telecom, later renamed Nortel Networks, from 1975 until the late 1980s when he started his own successful multimedia business named Duthie Associates, Inc. in Nashville.
Bob loved the time he spent with Mavis on their boats, especially the Katy Leigh, which they took on the adventure of a lifetime to complete the 6,000 mile Great Loop Cruise from Kentucky Lake, down the Mississippi River to the Gulf of Mexico, around Florida, up the Atlantic coast, and then finally up the St. Lawrence River and through the Great Lakes and back to Kentucky Lake via Chicago and the Mississippi River.
Bob and Mavis followed up their extensive boating travels with many land tours in small Winnebago motorhomes that took them to the four corners of North America – north to Alaska, east to Newfoundland, south to Florida, and west to California.
A private family ceremony to scatter Bob’s ashes will be held at a later date.
