John William McDaniel, Sr. “Big John and Johnny”, age 88 of Nashville, TN, was born on September 8, 1933 – died February 12, 2022.
Born in Decatur Alabama to the late Orvil McDaniel and Elsie Holliday McDaniel, he was the grandson of the late William B. and Elizabeth “Bessie” Brown McDaniel and John Washington Holliday and Thedocia Lively Brown Holliday.
He was preceded in death by his sisters, Docie Brown, Betty Fortner, and Shelby Crook; and two brothers who died in infancy Tilman Orvil and Garland Dwight McDaniel. He is survived by siblings, Jack McDaniel (Alice), Elaine, Jeff, Tim, and Lisa.
Johnny moved to Nashville with his guitar in 1951 to find work and while playing basketball met his future wife Joyce Faye Mason. They were married on October 15, 1955 and were by each other’s side until Joyce’s death in November 2015. They had two children Teresa Faye Boyd and John William (Nancy) McDaniel, Jr.
He is also survived by six grandchildren, Brandi Carter, David Lee (Lorena), Matt, Brian, Olivia and Phillip, along with 4 great-grandchildren, Bailey, Kayla, Daphne, and Ryan. He was preceded in death by his son-in-law, David L. Boyd.
He also deeply loved his in-laws, Edgar and Cova Mason along with his late brother-in-law, William “Dooley” Mason and is survived by sisters-in-law, Joanne Mason and Barbara (Jerry) Minton; and brother-in-law, James (Melissa) Mason.
His celebration of life will be led by Wendell Byrd and Jerry Maxwell on Saturday, February 19, 2022 at Woodbine Funeral Home, Hickory Chapel, 5852 Nolensville Road. Visitation will be from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. with the service at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be at Hermitage Memorial Gardens.
Grandsons, brothers-in-law, and friends will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers are members of the James M. Yates family, (Faye, Lisa, Lydia, and Laura), families of the Radnor and Gladstone Churches of Christ, and Loudean Ray, and members of the Michael Mason family.
