John Thomas Burnett, age 76 of Nashville, departed this life on July 13, 2021. He was born on September 29, 1944 to the late, Aaron Charlton and Myriam Jones Burnett. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his siblings, Nathan Burnett, Richard Burnett, Raymond Burnett, and Robert Burnett; and his ex-wife, Brenda Sue Blackmore.
John was a 1962 graduate of Central High School. In 1966, he graduated from Vanderbilt University with a Degree in Chemical Engineering with a Minor in Computer Science.
John took a job with Union Carbide, working in both Texas and Illinois from 1966 until 1972. He worked Ferro later Reichheld Chemical Company from 1973-1985, during part of the time he was there, Mr. Peter Lahde also worked there. He was a self-employed computer programmer from 1980 until 1995. In 1995 he worked for R.D. Herbert and sons Roofing Company until 2000. In 1995, John also went to work for the United States Postal Service, his reasoning, was to see how it was like to work for the government, working until his passing.
John was an avid chess player, competing in several tournaments and teaching Ron to be an International Chess Master. He was a bibliophile-always having a book in hand. John was known as a huge history buff and often took vacations somewhere historical-much to his children’s dismay. He loved genealogy and he was passionate about visiting historical, local, and famous cemeteries. His last vacation was to Hawaii with his family.
John is survived by his children, Ronald Burnett of Nashville, Tennessee and Sarah Burnett of Gallatin, Tennessee; grandchildren, Louis Anderson of Gallatin, Tennessee and Alexis Anderson, Lebanon, Tennessee; great-grandson, Kai; sisters, Lucy (Charles) DePriest of Burns, Tennessee and Evie (Jack) Moore of Springfield, Tennessee.
A Gathering of Family and Friends will be held from four until seven o’clock in the evening on Tuesday, July 20, 2021 at Woodlawn-Roesch-Patton Funeral Home.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at eleven o’clock in the morning on Wednesday, July 14, 2021 in Dignity Hall of Woodlawn-Roesch-Patton Funeral Home with Interment to follow in Woodlawn Memorial Park.
