John Patrick “Sug” Kain, US Army (Ret.), passed away peacefully on Monday, August 19, 2024, at the age of 75.
Pat was born on February 11th, 1949, to Margaret Beehan Kain and James Michael (Jimmy) Kain.
Pat graduated from Father Ryan High School in 1968 and then joined the United States Marine Corp…Semper Fi! He served in the Vietnam War. After Vietnam, he worked at Western Electric, then went on to join the TN Army National Guard, active guard reserve. He retired from the Guard as a First Sergeant after over 20 years of service. Pat was very patriotic. All you had to do was look at his vehicles because his patriotism was on full display!
Pat was preceded in death by his father, James, his mother, Margaret, his brother, Jimmy, his sisters, Helen and Betty, and granddaughters, Emerson and Everly.
Survived by his wife, Frances, and his children, Amy (JJ), Angie (Brian) and Chris (Kristi), as well as his stepson, David (Becky) and 7 grandkids who adored their Pop. He is also survived by 3 sisters, Tommie, Peggy & Dorothy. He will be remembered fondly by his extended family and countless friends. Pat had many close friends that he had known since childhood, and they were more like brothers.
After retiring from his military contract job, Pat went on to work at Academy Sports. Years later, he volunteered at the Veterans Hospital, driving people back and forth from the parking lot to the hospital. This job suited Pat well as he loved talking to people and never met a stranger! Following his retirement, Pat joined the American Legion Riders where he cherished the camaraderie and riding his Harley Davidson Trike. He enjoyed numerous rides with his fellow patriots.
During retirement, his greatest joy was cheering on his grandkids at all their events. Whether it was cheerleading, baseball, dance, jujitsu, wrestling, soccer or even the Pinewood Derby, Pop was their number one fan. No matter where or what they were doing, Pop was always asking for pictures and videos to stay involved in their lives.
We can’t end this obituary without mentioning his love for Notre Dame (Go Irish!) and Titans football. He was a Titans season ticket holder for many years, and he absolutely loved watching football. As some of you know, he was the most loyal and passionate fan however his “patience” vanished when watching his teams play.
Pat’s life was a testament to his dedication to duty, his love for his family, and his enduring commitment to his country. His legacy will continue to inspire, and his memory will forever be cherished.
Rest in peace, Pat. Your courage and sacrifice will never be forgotten.
