John-Marshall-Hagewood

John Marshall Hagewood, age 79, of Nashville, Tennessee, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 16, 2023.

He was born in San Antonio, Texas, on November 28, 1943, to the late Johnnie Marshall Clifton “Cliff” Hagewood and Billie Frances (White) Hagewood.

He attended Cheatham County High School and Castle Heights Military Academy (Class of 1962) and graduated from Austin Peay State University in 1966. John was in business with his father Cliff for 10 years at Hagewood Motors in Ashland City. Later, he managed the Nashville office of BlueCross BlueShield and served as a Vice President in the insurance division of SunTrust Bank.

John was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed numerous hunting, fishing and golf trips with family and friends. He loved to cook, garden, paint, and generally destroy the kitchen while “crafting.” He was the very definition of a Renaissance man.

John loved his family and was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. He modeled unconditional love, charity and hospitality. He was especially proud of his three remarkable granddaughters, with whom he shared his passion for cooking, fishing and art.

John also loved his dogs, especially his main man, Darin. An army of dogs awaits him in heaven, because his lap was the best place on earth.

John had a passion for helping others and volunteered in the aftercare program at Cumberland Heights. He was most proud of Johnny’s House, which he founded to provide a home and hope for men in recovery.

John was a loyal friend, a voracious reader, a master chef and a master eater. He was a gentle giant and had a heart of gold. He will be missed dearly by all who knew him.

John is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Elizabeth “Libbey” (Rosson) Hagewood; son, Robert “Bo” Clifton Hagewood; daughter, Dallas Hagewood Wilt (Fleming); sister, Linda Hagewood Tompkins; brother, Mack Cliff Hagewood (Cheri); and granddaughters, Marshall Elizabeth Wilt, Joanne “Josie” Fleming Wilt and Samantha Helen Hagewood.

He is also survived by numerous in-laws; nieces, nephews and their children; beloved friends far and wide; his rescue dog, Charli, and his grand-dog, Lina.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, May 30, 2023, at 10 am at the Cheatham County Funeral Home (117 Elizabeth St, Ashland City, TN). Burial will follow in Forest Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday, May 29, 2023, from 4-7 pm at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Cumberland Heights, Proverbs 12:10 Animal Rescue, or a charity of your choice.
