John-Louis-Tuley

John Louis Tuley of Nashville, Tennessee, passed away on Thursday, November 10, 2022, he was 89 years old. His final days were spent surrounded by the family he loved so much. He is loved dearly and will be missed.

John was born in Teaneck, NJ on January 27, 1933. He was the oldest of three children born to loving and brilliant parents, William Fegan and Lois Gibson Tuley.

John graduated as a chemical engineer from the University of Delaware, where he had fun being the Sig Ep president, playing basketball and lacrosse, and making mischief with his dog Delilah.

After graduating, he married Barbara Taylor, had three children and enjoyed a successful 30-year career, from chemist to executive, working with Monsanto. His work took him all over the world, including six years with his family living and working in Brussels.

After retiring in St. Louis, and after Barbara’s death, John spent more time golfing, snow skiing, biking and fishing, got his pilot’s license and took up scuba diving.

After meeting Mary Jo scuba diving in Palau, he was smitten and used the excuse of needing fly-miles in the plane just to be able to take her out to lunch. John and Mary Jo married and began their life together in Nashville in 2001. His wonderful adventures continued as he traveled the world with Mary Jo, his siblings, his children, stepchildren and grandchildren.

John had a lifetime commitment to family unity; inspiring curiosity, involvement and support in each other’s lives. He was hard-working, successful and always did what was needed. As patriarch and lauded family counselor, multiple generations sought his life and business advice.

His spirit was serious, focused, fun, funny, adventurous, generous, mischievous, smart, loyal, integrous and maybe a tad stubborn. He always had a smile and a witty joke at the ready.

John leaves behind his adored wife, Mary Jo, of Nashville. Loving father to Dianne (Bill) Tuley-Brown of Saratoga, Ca.; David (Maggie) Tuley of Houston, Tx.; Donna (Bob) Baumgarten of Lakewood, Co.; and loving stepfather to Jim (Heather) Loden and Ann (Mike) Roberts, both of Nashville.

He is also survived by grandchildren Sam Tuley, Michael (Nikki) Baumgarten, Max (Karleigh) Tuley, Brian (Dale) Baumgarten, Hannah Brown, Clayton Brown, James Loden and Reed Loden and newly minted great-grandchildren, Everett and Ada. Loving brother to Ruth (Dale) Broderick and Dick (Connie) Tuley.

Preceded in death by Barbara Taylor, his first wife and mother of his children, and his parents William Fegan and Lois Gibson Tuley.

The visitation will be held at the Sugartree Clubhouse, 4031 Woodmont Blvd., Nashville, Tn. on Thursday, November 17, 2022, from 4:30 to 6:30 pm.
