John Louis Hayes, Jr., of Madison, TN, passed away Thursday, February 20, 2025, at the age of 91.

He was born November 16, 1933, in Nashville, TN, where he grew up as the oldest of eleven children.

He attended North High School until he enlisted in the US Navy, serving three years of active service on the USS Cape Esperance, during the Korean War era. He continued in the naval reserve for over 20 years. While early in life he worked for Atlantic Envelope in Nashville, he spent most of his years working in restaurant management. He worked for St. Joseph Catholic Church as their bookkeeper until his retirement.

Louis was actively involved in coaching his sons’ baseball teams in the 1970s. He was a big Atlanta Braves fan. He loved to take his six boys fishing. He enjoyed photography. Later in life he discovered a love for reading.

He is preceded in death by his parents, John L. Hayes, Sr. and Louise Hayes Burnette; eight brothers and sisters; his loving wife of 57 years, Florence “Snookey” Hayes; and his third oldest son, Rick Hayes.

He is survived by his two sisters, Dorothy McNeil and Shirley Gzikowski; five sons, Rod (Sharon) Hayes, Randy (Judy) Hayes, Rusty (Toni) Hayes, Robbie (Gayle) Hayes, and Phillip Roland (Beth) Hayes; ten grandchildren; and sixteen great-grandchildren.

Family and friends are invited to attend the service, which will be held Monday, March 3, at 11:30 am, at Marshall-Donnelly-Combs Funeral Home (201 25th Avenue North, Nashville, TN 37203). Burial will follow at Springhill Cemetery (5110 Gallatin Pike South, Nashville, TN 37216). Visitation will be Sunday, March 2, from 2:00 to 5:00 pm, and Monday, March 3, from 10:00 am until the time of service, at the funeral home. https://www.dignitymemorial.com/obituaries/nashville-tn
