JoAnn Martha “Marta” O’Dwyer, born on November 10, 1935, in Topeka, Kansas, passed away on October 31, 2023, in Nashville, Tennessee.

Marta’s journey began on a picturesque farm outside Topeka, where she, alongside her parents and sister, cultivated a deep love for nature. Growing up in a family of farmers, Marta’s early years instilled in her a profound appreciation for the beauty of the natural world.

Marta’s family fostered a passion for both learning and the arts. Alongside her academic pursuits, she exhibited proficiency in music and art, showcasing her creative spirit. Her insatiable curiosity and love for knowledge led her to study special education at Kansas State University. It was during this time that she had the privilege of spending moments at the Central Institute for the Deaf in St. Louis, demonstrating her commitment to making a positive impact in the lives of others.

In the next chapter of her life, Marta’s adventurous spirit led her to Europe, accompanying her first husband who served in the military. During their time overseas, she taught and embarked on extensive travels, embracing the rich tapestry of cultures and experiences that the world had to offer. The loss of her first husband marked a new beginning for Marta as she relocated to Nashville, Tennessee.

In Nashville, Marta dedicated herself to a career in teaching, spanning over 25 years, leaving an indelible mark on countless lives. It was in Nashville that she encountered James Patrick “Doc” O’Dwyer, with whom she shared a deep and abiding love. Together, they embarked on various entrepreneurial ventures, including businesses related to airbrushing at Music Row and traveling around and performing in magic shows. Their shared love for their cats was nothing short of remarkable, embodying their warm and nurturing hearts.

Marta’s artistic talents were boundless, and her keen eye for detail shone through in her work. Her faith was a guiding force throughout her life, providing her with strength and solace. She will forever be remembered for her notes, each one concluding with expressions of love, rainbows, and sunshine.

Marta’s legacy is one of love, adventure, creativity, and unwavering faith. She touched the lives of many with her kindness, and her memory will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of all who knew her. In our hearts, she remains a beacon of love, joy, and the beauty of life.

A service will be held Wednesday, November 8 at 9:00 a.m. at Cathedral of the Incarnation, Nashville, TN followed by burial at 10:30 at Calvary Cemetery.
