James Kenneth Hampel of Old Hickory, Tennessee, died suddenly on October 17, 2022, he was 73 years old. Jim’s passing has left a huge hole in the hearts of so many who knew and loved him.

He has left behind a loving wife of almost 50 years, three children and seven grandsons that will fondly recall Grandpa.

Jim was the only son of Kenneth and Delores Hampel of Webster Groves, Missouri, where he and his sister were born.

He was a graduate of Vianney High School in St. Louis and the University of Missouri – Rolla, where he graduated as a Civil Engineer, while enlisted in ROTC followed by the Army Reserves where he left as Captain. During this time, he married Patti—his forever love—and moved to Florida to start his long, successful career in civil and environmental engineering.

They moved to the Nashville area, where they raised their children making sure that they all graduated from UT. Jim’s passions, besides his family, included: woodworking, remodeling, hunting and fishing, Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts, organic gardening, deck building, car repair, Father Ryan sports, UT football, collecting lots of “stuff,” grilling, pickling the fruits of his garden, relocating squirrels and giving advice.

Jim is preceded in death by his parents and son, Jeffrey Scott.

He is survived by his wife, Patti; his son, Kevin (wife Sara and sons Ethan, Jack, Charlie, and Reid); son, Jonathan (wife Amanda and sons Rowland and Hank); daughter, Kristin (husband Andy Nelson and son Jeffrey); and his sister, Sue Colburn. In addition, he has left behind his many sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews and friends.

Jim was a devoted Catholic throughout his life, a current member of St. Stephen Catholic Community and a life-long member of the Knights of Columbus, having served as the first Grand Knight of St. Stephen Council 9282.

A Funeral Mass will be held Monday, October 24, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Stephen Catholic Community. There will be a visitation from 9:30-11:00 a.m. with a luncheon immediately following the memorial mass.
