Hunter Sutherland York, of Nashville, Tennessee, passed away on Sunday, November 6, 2022, following a brief illness.

He was born on November 28, 1993, in Oxford, Mississippi, to Greg and Michelle York of Nashville.

Though his time on Earth with family and friends was much too brief, Hunter had a tremendous impact on those around him during his nearly 29 years of life. His enthusiasm for life was contagious, and he was truly a light to those that knew him. Hunter is known for his passion for sports, his love of coaching, his loyalty to his friends, his devotion to his family and his love of God.

His passion for sports began at an early age. Hunter was deeply involved in youth and school athletics, playing varsity football and basketball at Heritage Christian School in Indianapolis, Indiana, from which he graduated in 2012. As an Oxford native and son of a former University of Mississippi volleyball player and coach, Hunter’s passion for Ole Miss sports ran deep, and he was loyal to his team, no matter the outcome, for his whole life.

Hunter was a firm believer in the life-transforming impact of athletics and pursued several professional opportunities that allowed him to make a difference in the lives of others through his work. He coached basketball, football and girls lacrosse at Heritage Christian and worked numerous athletic summer camps as well. He was the director of activities and a camp counselor for several summers at Spring Mill Bible Camp in Indiana, he served as a marketing intern for the Indy 11 professional soccer team and coached AAU basketball teams. He was a staff writer for AztecaSoccer.com, SoocerPro.com and TheStoppageTime.com and served as a brand ambassador for several sports companies.

After completing his Bachelor of Science degree in business leadership at Lipscomb University, Hunter worked as an assistant boys’ basketball coach, substitute teacher and as assistant to the athletic director at Lipscomb Academy, where he managed the digital content for several athletic programs. Hunter was most committed to impacting the young men he coached in ways that were transformational to their character and faith. He believed in each of them and was intentional about helping them understand their value. Hunter was also the owner of Football Boot Review and co-owner of the “Coffee with a Kick” podcast.

To all who knew Hunter, he was generous, loyal, loving and kind; devoted to his friends; and passionate about being a person of integrity. He spent his free time connecting with his friends as he played video games, fantasy football or just hanging out. Even with his profound love of being involved in sports, Hunter was most content when he was with those he loved the most. He was deeply devoted to his family, and there was no place Hunter would rather be than at home hanging out with them. He was a loyal son, brother and uncle. He loved his brothers deeply and enjoyed watching and attending sporting events with them. He took great pride in and deeply loved his nephew, Samuel, and niece, Caroline. Hunter took great joy in teaching Samuel how to shoot a basketball or throw a football, and his legacy and passion for sports will live on in him.

Hunter is survived by his father and mother, Greg and Michelle York; his brothers, Kegan (Hannah) and Kaelan; his nephew, Samuel, and niece, Caroline; his paternal grandfather, Jimmie York; his maternal grandfather, Coley Whitby; bonus grandparents, Jim and Glenda Hendrix; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends who loved him dearly.

A celebration of Hunter’s life will take place Saturday, November 19, 2022, at 11 a.m. at Harpeth Hills Church of Christ, 1949 Old Hickory Blvd, Brentwood, TN 37027.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund on his behalf has been established. Gifts may be made here.
