Eleanor-Miller-Akers

Eleanor Miller Akers passed away peacefully at her home, on Monday, April 4, 2022, surrounded by her family.

Eleanor Louise Miller was born March 21, 1928, in Mobile, AL., the sixth child of Lillie Lee Hurrey and Nathan Aquilla Miller.

She moved with her family to Nashville, where she graduated from West End High School. While at West, she met the love of her life, James Clark Akers III. They married on November 19, 1949, and were married for 70 years.

She is survived by her son, Andrew Miller Akers, Sr., and her grandchildren, Andrew Miller Akers, Jr. of Nashville and Sarah Michelle Akers of Chicago; her sister-in-law, JoAnn Denman Akers; daughter-in-law, Tammy Akers; and very dear friends Naji Abumrad, Leslei Moncrief and Bart Kendrick.

It was her specific wish that her nieces and nephews be named here. They are Sara Rollow Long of Mineola, TX; Lee Rollow Perry (Mike) of Lynchburg, VA; Ann Rollow of Bedford, TX; Ann Stuckey Owen of Madisonville, KY; Jack Herndon (Cindy); Steve Herndon (Nancy); Nathan Miller of Houston; Jessica Thigpen (Scott) of Atlanta; Will Akers (Cissy); T.Clark Akers (Elizabeth); Kelly Akers Linton (MacRae) and Andree Akers LeQuire (Alan).

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, J. Clark; her son, John William Akers; her niece, Elizabeth Stuckey Greathouse; her nephew, Homer Lee Owen; her sisters, Natalie Miller Rollow, Harriet Miller Stuckey, and Lucy Miller Herndon; and her brothers Charles Edward Miller and Nathan Aquilla Miller, Jr.

The family would like to thank the following friends and caregivers who were an important part of Eleanor’s life: Sue Frank, Kimberley Lawrence, Bethlehem Aregai, Lydia Aregai, Berhane Gashawe, Allison Johnson, and Frank Canale.

Eleanor and her sisters and their families all lived in Nashville, and birthdays and holidays were always family times, shared at one home or another. In later years, Eleanor and J. Clark’s home was the gathering place. As the cousins became adults and had families of their own, the numbers grew, but the gathering place was always the same. Eleanor was the Mother and Grandmother, the aunt, the great aunt, and the great-great-aunt who always welcomed us with love and grace.

For the last home that Eleanor and J. Clark built, he designed a cornerstone for the foundation, which was an eloquent expression of his love for her and her importance to the four generations of her family. The cornerstone reads:

ELEANOR Is The Cornerstone Of This House And This Family

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Clark and Eleanor Akers Scholarship at Spring Hill College, Mobile, AL, or to Alive Hospice, Nashville.

A memorial service to celebrate Eleanor’s life will be held at St. George’s Episcopal Church on Tuesday, April 12, at 11:30. Interment will follow at the church columbarium. There will be a visitation an hour prior to the service.

Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.marshalldonnellycombs.com for the Akers family.
