Clarence Sutherland III, 94, passed away on April 8, 2025, at The Health Center at Richland Place.

He was born on November 10, 1930, to Mary Williamson and Clarence Sutherland, Jr.

He graduated from Hillsboro High School and Vanderbilt University (Engineering, Sigma Nu), served two years in the Army, then eight years with DuPont, finally launching an almost 50-year career in commercial real estate, which brought him great joy and many friendships.

A natural teacher and problem-solver, he used his knowledge of his native Nashville to perform his most rewarding work, securing properties for the three churches he helped found: Christ Presbyterian Church, Covenant Presbyterian Church (Elder Emeritus), and Stephens Valley Church (Elder Emeritus). He was a charter board member of Nashville Youth for Christ, a ministry he and Susan supported in its early years.

He loved the beaches near Sarasota, FL and Litchfield Beach, SC, meals with close friends, and, most of all, time with his family.

Clarence was predeceased by his sister, Jane Sutherland Carson, and son, James Clayton Sutherland.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Susan Clayton Sutherland; daughter, Julia; grandson, Christian; brother, Kirk; sisters-in-law, Sarah Clayton and Laura Clayton West; brother-in-law, Allen Clayton; and many nieces and nephews.

The family is deeply grateful to his caregivers and everyone at The Health Center at Richland Place.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Stephens Valley Church on Saturday, May 17, at 1 p.m., with visitation to follow from 2-3 p.m. https://www.dignitymemorial.com/obituaries/nashville-tn
