The life of Annie Laura Pulley-Pugh began December 25, 1928, to the loving parents of John L. and Lula Butler Pulley of Toney, Alabama. She passed away on Monday, September 25, 2023.

She was the first born and when of age her helpful hands and dedicated assistance provided to parents and siblings were a welcome delight. Chores were a constant way of life but not too busy to address spiritual and educational development.

At an early age, she became a member of Turner Chapel Christian Methodist Episcopal Church (C.M.E.) in Toney, Alabama. She served as a faithful member in Sunday School as well as Sunday School Treasurer and Teacher. Often one could find Annie developing many church programs and activities at Turner Chapel. While developing her spiritual life, she also completed elementary and secondary education at Toney High School and later attended higher education at Alabama A. & M. University, Normal, Alabama.

Annie was wed to the late Rev. Washington Henry Pugh and to this union, three sons were born, Jeffery, Washington, and Kelvin Pugh. She was deeply committed to marriage, family and responsible parenting. Marriage to a Methodist minister afforded the opportunity to serve C.M.E. Churches in five states. She was a dedicated and faithful follower of Christ, engaging in daily prayer, Bible Study and community outreach.

Annie loved working with the Missionary and Stewardess Boards. She served as President of Stewardess Boards at William Temple C.M.E. Church, Richmond, Virginia, New Mt. Olive C.M.E. Church, Buffalo, New York, and St. Luke, C.M.E. Church, Nashville, Tennessee. While being a devout member at St. Luke, other offices held included Secretary and Treasurer of Christian Social Relation Circle and Treasurer of General Missionary Society. She modeled the Christian life never wavering in faith and her belief in Jesus Christ.

Civic and other employment responsibilities were not neglected for it was common for Annie to write to local governmental officials regarding the need to eradicate injustices and to assist those in need.

During her sons’ formative years, she was a member of Parent Teacher Organizations, and later elected to serve on the Parents Advisory Board under the supervision of the Phoenix, Arizona Board of Education.

Other employment endeavors included the development of nursery schools in Madisonville, Kentucky and Richmond, Virginia, as well as employment at Blackwell Elementary School, Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, Booker Washington Elementary School, Phoenix, Arizona and Office/Financial Assistant, Pulley’s Graphic Center, Nashville, Tennessee.

Left to celebrate her life are two sons, Jeffery C. Pugh (Ellen) of Surprise, AZ, Washington Lamar Pugh (Sandra) of Tempe, AZ, ten grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

The surviving members of her extended family are one brother, Lonnie (Mildred) Pulley of Nashville, Tennessee, seven sisters, Dorothy Patton of Washington, D.C., Zola Jolley of Nashville, Tennessee, Margaret Pulley, of Toney, Alabama, Myrtle (Wendell) Sherrell of Nashville, Tennessee, Joylean (Charles) Sampson of Columbia, Missouri, Belinda (John) Frost of Pearland, Texas, and Cynthia (Cliff) Walker of Birmingham, Alabama, sister-in-law, Katherine Pulley of Nashville, Tennessee, loving nieces, nephews; other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John & Lula Pulley, her spouse, Washington Henry Pugh, her son Kelvin Pugh, and two siblings, James Pulley and Napoleon Pulley.
