The Greater Nashville Regional Council (GNRC) has announced three public workshops to provide residents and stakeholders the opportunity to offer input on how the region can improve air quality and lower energy costs for households, businesses, and government agencies. The meetings will be held online on February 22 and in person on February 27 and 28. The workshops are part of ongoing planning efforts funded through a grant made available by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

The EPA is providing $5 billion in grants to states, local governments, tribes, and territories through its Climate Pollution Reduction Grant Program (CPRG) to develop and implement ambitious plans for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and other harmful air pollution. GNRC was awarded $1 million to lead planning activities and community engagement efforts for the Nashville-Davidson-Murfreesboro-Franklin Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA). GNRC’s regional efforts will be coordinated with the State of Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC). TDEC is leading statewide activities to develop an emissions reduction plan called the Tennessee Volunteer Emission Reduction Strategy (TVERS).

The regional and statewide planning efforts are a required step in qualifying Tennessee communities and public agencies for a share of the funding already made available nationally to implement projects that can help create jobs, lower energy costs for families and local businesses, and improve air quality and public health.

As part of the process, GNRC is responsible for developing a regional greenhouse gas inventory and working with jurisdictions across Middle Tennessee to identify near-term, high-priority, implementation-ready projects that will help reduce emissions and air pollutants. Through the upcoming workshops, Middle Tennesseans will have the opportunity to learn about greenhouse gases and the importance of assessing their environmental impacts. Feedback from workshop participants will help shape the region’s efforts to improve air quality and reduce energy costs.
