Planning to run some errands or squeeze in a little shopping this Fourth of July? Before you head out, it’s worth checking ahead — while many retailers will be open for at least part of the day, others will be closed in observance of the holiday. Here’s a look at what you can expect from some of the most popular stores and retailers this July 4th.
These places are closed.
Banks: CLOSED. As Independence Day is a federal holiday that falls on a Saturday, all banks will be closed on July 4, 2026, but branches will typically remain open on Friday, July 3. Play it safe and plan ahead if you’ll need cash to get through the weekend!
Costco: CLOSED. Most chain stores are open on Independence Day, but Costco is a major exception and will be closed on July 4, 2026. Be sure to stock up on party-sized packs of burgers and paper goods for your barbecue ahead of time.
FedEx: CLOSED. FedEx is closed for pickup and delivery on Saturday, July 4, 2026, and many locations will have modified service on Friday, July 3. However, many FedEx Office locations will be open both days for some services (see below).
UPS: CLOSED. There is no UPS pickup or delivery on Saturday, July 4, 2026, but some UPS stores may be open with limited hours. UPS will also be open for normal operations on Friday, July 3.
USPS: CLOSED. USPS is closed for all federal holidays, including Independence Day on Saturday, July 4, 2026. However, post offices will be open as normal on Friday, July 3.

ALDI – OPEN (Modified Hours). The affordable, no-frills grocery chain will be open with limited hours on Independence Day, with many locations closing as early as 4 p.m.
Food Lion – OPEN (Regular Hours). This Independence Day, the grocery store will be open with regular hours at its many locations throughout the Southeast.
Kroger – OPEN (Regular Hours). The grocery store will be open for business as usual on the Fourth of July, but be advised that pharmacy and clinic hours may vary by location.
Publix – OPEN (Regular Hours). Stores will be open with normal operating hours for all your grocery needs, but the pharmacy will be closed at most locations, if not all.
Trader Joe’s – OPEN (Modified Hours). All locations are open for Independence Day, but will close early at 5 p.m. — so stock up on those pretzel hamburger buns and Strawberry Hold the Cone! mini ice cream cones ahead of time.
Whole Foods – OPEN (Regular Hours). The organic grocery chain will be open for regular business, so you can pop into your nearest store to shop fresh produce for a fruit salad and grilled veggies to go with your burgers.
CVS – OPEN (Modified Hours). The drugstore will be open on July 4, 2026, though some locations will operate with reduced hours, especially in the pharmacy department. Check your store before you go!
Walgreens – OPEN (Regular Hours). All locations will be open for regular business on July 4, 2026, including pharmacies at more than 4,000 Walgreens.
The Home Depot – OPEN (Modified Hours). The home improvement giant will be open on Independence Day if you need charcoal for the grill or last-minute cleanup tools, but will close early at 8 p.m.
HomeGoods – OPEN (Regular Hours). Stores will be open for the Fourth of July — most with regular hours — just in case you need some last-minute decor for your backyard barbecue.
Lowe’s – OPEN (Modified Hours). All locations will be open for last-minute home improvement projects and barbecue prep, but many may close early at 8 p.m
