Quick response by West Precinct officers Sunday night led to the arrest of Jose J. Abarca, 30, on several burglary related charges after he left the scene of a car crash in a stolen Ford Fusion and then attempted to break into multiple homes and vehicles on 33rd Avenue North before he was apprehended.

The Fusion, stolen on February 7 on Highway 70 South with the keys inside, wrecked into a power line before striking a concrete wall at the intersection of Charlotte Pike and 33rd Avenue North. The driver had left the scene, but a witness gave a complete suspect description to responding officers.

Shortly after the crash, dispatch began receiving calls from nearby homeowners on 33rd Avenue North who saw a suspect matching the description given at the scene of the car crash attempting to break into their homes and vehicles.

Responding officers quickly searched the area and located Abarca sitting in the back seat of a Range Rover inside a home garage. He was taken into custody without incident.

Abarca was charged with motor vehicle burglary, two counts of attempted motor vehicle burglary, four counts of aggravated attempted burglary, theft, vandalism, aggravated criminal trespassing and leaving the scene of an accident. He remains jailed on $150,000 bond.
