September 9, 2023 – A self-defense claim is under investigation in regard to Friday afternoon’s fatal shooting of an as yet unidentified man in the 4800 block of Goodwin Road.
The investigation, being led by Homicide Unit Detective Juan Gonzalez, indicates that Travis O’Connor, 37, was working with his uncle on Artelia Drive when they suddenly saw someone driving away in the uncle’s pickup truck. O’Connor and his uncle got into his vehicle and began following the stolen truck, while calling 911 to advise what had happened.
The truck stopped in the 4800 block of Goodwin Road. The unidentified man got out, as did O’Conner and his uncle. The uncle said he saw the man reach for something, at which point O’Connor shot him. The uncle said O’Connor referenced a machete. A machete was found at the scene.
A pistol was recovered from O’Connor’s vehicle. O’Connor declined to speak to detectives prior to consulting an attorney
No charges have been placed in this case at present. The investigation, once complete, will be staffed with the District Attorney’s Office.
