Stuart Edwin Nicholson passed away on September 7, 2024.

Stuart was born June 29, 1927 in Cheatham County, TN to his late parents Bailey Edwin Nicholson and Thelma Stuart Nicholson.

Stuart was preceded in death by his wife Dr. Jean Nicholson, who passed away in April of this year.

Stuart attended Glenn School, Highland Heights Junior School, and Peabody Demonstration School in Nashville before graduating from Birmingham-Southern College with a Bachelor of Arts degree. While at BSC, Stuart was a member of the varsity basketball team as well as an active member in Theta Chi fraternity. He later received a Master of Arts degree from Peabody College.

Stuart spent 40 years in the Metropolitan Nashville school system as a teacher, principal, and truant officer. He was also a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army Air Force. He subsequently was a pilot for the Tennessee Air National Guard for five years before he transferred to the Tennessee Army National Guard where he spent 27 years as a pilot.

Stuart had a special love and loyalty to the Tennessee National Guard because it was through the Guard that he was able to participate in the world of flight while being able to serve his country for over three decades.

In addition to his love of flying, Stuart was an avid historian. His love and appreciation of Nashville and Middle Tennessee were matched by few.

He was also an active member in the American Legion and Church of the Advent Episcopal Church in Nashville.

Stuart is survived by his son Brian and daughter-in-law Patricia as well as granddaughters Molly and Kelsey.

A visitation and funeral service will be held at Church of the Advent in Nashville beginning at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, September 12, with the funeral service scheduled to begin at 4:00 pm. Stuart’s burial service will be at Spring Hill Funeral Home and Cemetery on Friday, September 13 at 11:00 am. https://www.springhillfh.com

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Church of the Advent Episcopal Church.
