Richard-Merle-Condrey

Richard Merle Condrey laid down his earthly life and was welcomed to his eternal life by the open arms of his savior on October 21.

Richard was born in Tupelo MS to Jack and Ida Mae Condrey. He attended Vanderbilt University on a NROTC scholarship. It was there on a blind date that he met his wife of 69 years, Jean Kirby Condrey. Upon graduation, Richard elected to become a proud officer in the United States Marine Corps. He spent 2 years on Active Duty, and over the next 28 years in the reserves, he rose to the rank of Colonel, serving as Battalion Commander.

Richard was an engineer by education (and temperament) and spent the bulk of his professional career with IBM in Birmingham AL where he sold the “big iron.” Jean and Richard were blessed with a son Mike and a daughter Lou who in turn blessed them with grandchildren and great grandchildren. Richard was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Martha Jane Condrey Jones and his daughter Martha Louise Condrey Douglas.

Surviving Richard are his wife Jean (who he always lovingly referred to as “his Bride”), his son Richard Michael Condrey (Cecelia), son-in-law James Ogburn Douglas, grandchildren Sarah Walton Condrey, Katherine Dietrich Condrey Pinto (Andrew), Richard Davison Douglas, Grace Condrey Douglas, and Camille Condrey Marks (Schaefer). In addition, there are 3 great-grandchildren (who will learn about “Pop”), and 4 nieces and a nephew who loved their Uncle Richard. He will be fondly remembered for beach trips, sailing and skiing adventures, shooting lessons, and laughing at the “Pink Panther.”

Being deeply involved with the Boy Scouts and the USMC were important to Richard. But the most important thing in his life was his deep and abiding relationship with and service to his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Those who knew Richard knew him as a man of few words- chief among them: a robust greeting of “HEY” and frequent exclamation of “HALLELUJAH.”

His family would especially like to thank Anita Kirby Cochran and Jim Douglas for their love and devoted support. Special thanks and gratitude for the amazing staff at Abe’s Garden Community and Alive Hospice.

We request that in lieu of flowers, gifts be made to Abe’s Garden Community, 115 Woodmont Blvd, Nashville TN 37205 or online at www.abesgarden.org/givenow.

A memorial service for Richard will be held Saturday November 9, 2024, starting at 3:00 pm, Christ Presbyterian Church, 2323 Old Hickory Blvd, Nashville, TN 37215. https://www.dignitymemorial.com/obituaries/nashville-tn
