67-year-old Mr. Phil Deering was pronounced deceased at 1:13 p.m. Friday afternoon September 6, 2024 after arriving at the Highpoint Health – Riverview Emergency Room with C.P. R. in progress.

The Smith County E-911 had received a call for assistance at his Hillcrest Drive home for a gentleman unresponsive. Mr. Deering suffered from sugar diabetes.

His close friend, Eld. Larry Dillard, will officiate at the 11 a.m. Tuesday morning September 9th funeral service from the Carthage Chapel of Sanderson Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Deering family plot in section five at the Defeated Creek Memorial Gardens.

The Deering family will receive friends at Sanderson in Carthage on Monday September 9th from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m. and again on Tuesday after 9 a.m.

He was one of two children, and was born Phillip Hubert Deering in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on June 7, 1957 and was the son of the late World War II Army veteran Hubert Jefferson Deering who died May 17, 1996 at the age of 74 and Thelma Pauline Partin Deering who died Christmas Day December 25, 1989 also at the age of 74.

Mr. Deering’s special needs sister, Reva Lynn Deering, preceded him in death at the age of 19 on November 4, 1974 and a step-son, Christopher Stephen Porterfield died at the age of 42 on February 14, 2018 and a half-sister, Ramona Seddon also preceded him in death.

He was a graduate of the 1975 class at Smith County High School where he majored in auto mechanics. He was also a member of the Vocational and Industrial class his final three years in high school and his freshman and sophomore years he was a member of the Pep Club.

Mr. Deering was a retired over the road truck driver having retired in 2013.

Surviving is his companion of thirty years, Linda Carol Gibbs Deering of Carthage; two daughters, Amanda Deering and husband K. C. White and their two sons, Grayson and Xavier White all of Irvine, California, Christie Ray Houston and husband Mike of Cookeville; four step-children, Shelley Merritt and husband Bert of Smithville, Michael Driver and wife Tina of Carthage, Michelle Draper and companion Daniel Duncan of Carthage, and Holly Kemp and husband Scot also of Carthage; nine step-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren.
