In Loving Memory

Mildred Anita Nipper

November 17, 1927 – January 25, 2025

Anita Nipper, lovingly known as “Grandma Plum”, passed peacefully from this life on Saturday, January 25, 2025, surrounded by love.

Anita was born in Hillsboro, Tennessee on November 17, 1927, to Sam and Espa Burnett Layne who preceded her in death along with daughter, Carolyn Jane, her brothers, Bobby Frank Layne, Joe Ned Layne, Larry Bennett Layne, and Harvey David Layne.

Anita was a graduate of Manchester Central High School where she was known as a talented basketball player. Frequently covered in newspapers as “Little Cinderella” and “Featherweight,” it was reported that she often stole the show. After graduation, she had several offers to continue her basketball career but instead chose to move to Nashville to attend Nashville Business College. After receiving her degree, she focused her professional life on accounting and bookkeeping.

Anita was a beacon of warmth, generosity, kindness, and wisdom. Her nickname “Grandma Plum” perfectly captured her sweet, nurturing spirit. Anita brought joy and light to all who knew her and wanted all to know, “she had a wonderful life”.

Anita loved the Lord and was a member of City Road Chapel United Methodist Church for over 70 years.

Above all, she was a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend who always put her family first. She worked tirelessly to make sure her girls had everything and more. Her legacy of love and generosity will live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate to know her. Her annual Thanksgiving celebrations were the highlight of the year for family.

Anita’s life was a celebration of kindness, caring for others, and her beloved cat, Thomas (Tom Tom). Her memory will continue to inspire us. She leaves behind a family who adored and cherished her.

Anita is survived by Daughters, Nancy Coker and Susan Crutchfield.
