Mazella began a lifetime of being a loving caretaker when she was a very young girl, caring for her brothers and sisters, seeing to their needs and inspiring and encouraging them all through school years. When Mazella graduated high school, she told her father she wanted to be a nurse. He was able to make that happen through a scholarship program offered by the Business and Professional Women’s Club to help relieve a critical shortage of nurses in the area. So, Mazella packed her suitcase and boarded a bus to Nashville. She studied diligently and with determination and graduated from nursing school in 1958. To reimburse her scholarship, it was necessary for Mazella to return to Bowling Green to commit a year of service at the City-County Hospital where she served faithfully with honor.

Mazella loved her family in Kentucky dearly, but she also had been introduced to and fell in love with Floyd while studying in Nashville. So, soon after she completed her one-year service commitment in Bowling Green, she boarded another bus to return to Nashville and married her beloved sweetheart. Mazella and Floyd made trips to Kentucky regularly attending family gatherings and celebrations. After an exceptional career, Mazella retired from nursing after many years working for General Hospital and later Bordeaux Hospital. She retained her nursing license for several years after retiring and was often called upon to administer injections, check blood sugar and make wellness checks for members of the community. Mazella was a caregiver at heart, clearly gifted by the Lord, whom she loved and served so well. The nursing degree simply provided provision for being a caregiver, and she did it with honor, love, joy, and thankfulness.

Mazella served her church and her community well. She was a faithful member of First Baptist Church Joelton where she made “cradle calls” with Floyd for the newborns and prepared and delivered Meals on Wheels to homebound community and church members.

She loved gardening with Floyd. She gave away many tomatoes, green beans, and corn grown in their garden. Mazella was famous for her homemade “chow chow”. She also loved growing flowers in her yard and sharing them. When attending a funeral for a dear friend, Roger noticed there were no flowers sent from the Melton family and commented on this to his Mom. Mazella’s response was that she gave her friend flowers while she was living. Mazella was a quiet, gentle lady, stoic on the outside with a selfless heart of gold on the inside. Mazella was truly a reflection of the love of the Lord and her life touched countless other lives in His Name and with her love.
