Mary Emma Griffith passed peacefully on February 15, 2025, after a brief illness. She is survived by her daughter, Suzanne Curtis (Anthony), grandchildren, Cara Curtis and Christopher Curtis, and many nieces and nephews. Mary was 95 years young at the time of her death. For the past three years, she has enjoyed close friendships and social activities at Maybelle Carter Senior Living Facility in Madison, Tennessee.
Mary was born in Elkton, Kentucky, on October 4th, 1929. Her parents were Inez and Roy Blaylock. She was next to the youngest in a family of seven girls. She graduated from Todd County High School in 1948 and received a diploma from Nashville Business School in 1949.
She met her husband Walter R. Griffith on a bus ride from Kentucky to Nashville in 1948. Mary and Roy were married for 65 years until his death in 2014. The couple were devoted members of Tulip Street United Methodist Church in East Nashville. At Tulip Street, they mentored youth in the church’s youth programs and later served in various positions on the administrative board.
Mary had a lifelong love for fashion and sewing. She took sewing classes at Watkins Institute and won Tennessee State Fair awards for smocking and handmade children’s clothing.
Mary served in administrative secretary positions with the State of Tennessee Vocational Rehabilitation Department and the Department of Revenue. After retiring in 1992, she enjoyed spending more time with her grandchildren. Mary and Roy enjoyed trips to England, Canada, Alaska, Hawaii, and many other regions of the United States.
In the last years of her life, Mary attended Sunday school and services at City Road United Methodist Church. Throughout her life, Mary had many dear friends. She also was passionate about animals, especially dogs, cats, and horses. The family would like to thank the nurses and staff from Accent Care and Hillcrest Healthcare in Ashland City, for providing exemplary hospice care.
Mary’s visitation will take place on Saturday, February 22nd, from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Spring Hill Funeral Home located at 5110 Gallatin Pike S Nashville, TN 37216. Burial and a graveside service will be held on February 25, 2025, at 1 p.m.
