It is with great sadness that the family of Mary Bess Gilliland Duncan announces that she was called home to her heavenly Father on Thursday, October 10, 2024, at the age of 64. She passed away peacefully after a long illness surrounded by family at Alive Hospice in Nashville, TN.
Bess was born on January 25, 1960, in Madison, TN to Milton Edsel Gilliland and Barbara Ann Laux Gilliland. She will be remembered for her genuine kindness and her love for the Lord which shined like a light throughout her life. Bess had a career in Medical Administration which spanned 40 plus years in Mississippi and Tennessee.
Many things made Bess smile. She loved to read, enjoyed music, cooking for her family, growing beautiful flowers, and going to the beach. More than anything though, Bess loved being “B” to her two grandsons whom she adored. Throughout her illness, they gave her such joy and kept a smile on her face.
Bess is survived by daughters: Monica Duncan of Gallatin, TN and Tracey Hightower (Casey) of Gallatin, TN; Grandsons: Duncan and Henry Hightower; Sisters: Donna Todd (Terry) of Murfreesboro, TN; Linda Allen (Larry) of LaGrange, KY; Frances Parker (Wayne) of Mt. Juliet, TN; Brothers: Milton Gil Gilliland (Sheila) of The Villages, FL; Jesse Gilliland of Nashville, TN; sister-in-law, Linnea Gilliland of Madison, TN and a host of nieces and nephews all of whom she deeply loved.
Bess was preceded in death by her beloved father and mother, Milton Edsel and Barbara Ann Gilliland and her brother, Edward “Ned” Gilliland.
Visitation will be held at Spring Hill Funeral Home, 5110 Gallatin Pike South, Nashville, TN 37216; on October 17th, 2024, from 4pm-7pm and October 18th, 2024, from 3pm-4pm with a Celebration of Life to follow at 4pm.
