John Arthur Ramsey, Jr., passed away on September 12, 2022, after a well lived 96 years devoted to God and family.

Born May 14, 1926 in Nashville to the late John Arthur Ramsey, Sr., and Carmen (Kronk) Ramsey, he is preceded in death by his sister, Nancy Fandrich, and survived by his sister Sandra Chapman.

John leaves behind his loving wife of 73 years, Mary Elizabeth “Liz” (Chaffin) Ramsey; sons John Arthur “Jay” (Sarah) Ramsey, III, Robert Chaffin (Jean) Ramsey; and Laurence Perry (Susan) Ramsey. John was also a dedicated “Papaw” to eight grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.

A graduate of Isaac Litton High School, where he learned to type, John left for Washington DC on his eighteenth birthday to manage codes for the Navy, having been recruited for his typing skills. After proudly serving his country for two years, he attended Vanderbilt University School of Engineering and graduated in three years. In 1948, John and his brother-in-law Robert H. “Nick” Daugherty founded their custom home building business, Ramsey-Daugherty Company, which would grow to become one of Nashville’s premier home builders. John retired at the age of 88, only when he was no longer able to drive himself to work.

John and Liz have been loyal 70-year members of Woodmont Christian Church, where John served as an elder and chairman of the board. But, he may have been most proud that four generations of Ramseys now attend the church that he dearly loved. He was an active member of the Rotary Club of Nashville for many years and an avid golfer at Hillwood Country Club, where he served as president.

John loved God, his church, his family, and any and all Vanderbilt Commodore teams. His gentle, quiet way will be missed by many.

A celebration of life service will be held Monday, September 19 at 11 a.m. at Woodmont Christian Church on Hillsboro Road, officiated by Reverends Clay and Roy Stauffer.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Woodmont Christian Church.

Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.marshalldonnellycombs.com for the Ramsey family.
