Mrs. Joan House of the Brush Creek Community has passed from this life to her eternal home at the Tri-Star Summit Medical Center in Hermitage at the age of 81 at 9:28 a.m. Christmas Eve morning December 24, 2024 and where she was admitted early Friday morning December 20th after suffering years of declining health.
Funeral services from the Carthage Chapel of Sanderson Funeral Home will be conducted on Saturday morning December 28th with officiating Bro. Oran Collins and Pastor Roger Grisham officiating. Burial will follow near her daughter and with their infant son in the Garden of the Cross at the Smith County Memorial Gardens.
The House family will receive friends at Sanderson in Carthage on Friday December 27th from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. and again on Saturday after 9 a.m. until the 11 a.m. services.
Born Joan Gibbs in Carthage on May 10, 1943, she was one of seven children and the third of five daughters and two sons and was the daughter of the late Douglas Wilson Gibbs who died February 16, 1955 at the age of 37 and Cora Bell Comstock Gibbs Hardcastle Comstock who died January 3, 2000 at the age of 79. A brother, Henry Wilson “Pete” Gibbs, a Vietnam veteran, died December 14, 2024 at the age of 85.
Also preceding her in death were four sisters, Carolyn Louise Gibbs Grisham who died December 14, 2022 at the age of 85 and Helen Loneta Gibbs Crawford who died November 22, 2022 at the age of 81 and both of these sisters served twelve years each as Smith County Court Clerk, Carolyn 1978 to 1990 and Helen 1990 to 2002. Also preceding these three in death were Patty Sue Gibbs Huddleston who died November 28, 2007 at the age of 60 and Clarence Odell “Bucky” Hardcastle who died December 2, 2015.
On June 20, 1968, Mrs. Joan was united in marriage in Hartsville to New Middleton native Kenneth Edward House. They were preceded in death by a one-day old son, Timothy Scott House who died March 9, 1991 and by a daughter, Janet Lynn Grisham Denney who died May 30, 2012 at the age of 51.
Mrs. House was a longtime Licensed Practical Nurse working at both the former Carthage General Hospital and the former Smith County Memorial Hospital. A recipient of her General Education Degree, she was a graduate of the Smith County Memorial Hospital 1968 class of L. P. N. ‘s taught by the late Mrs. Polly Beasley.
She had a gentle spirit and was a kind and caring nurse to those assigned to her care. She retired as supervisor of nursing at the former Smith County Health Care (now Smith County Health and Rehabilitation Center) in 2004.
Surviving in addition to her husband of over fifty-six years are her four children, Bobbie Grisham Eastes and husband Donnie of the Sullivans Bend Community, Jimmy Grisham and wife Donna of the Popes Hill Community, Christa House Wright and husband Todd of Wartrace, Tennessee, Kim House Cotttrell and husband Daniel of Coconut Creek, Florida; sister, Leah Justine Gibbs Lewis of Carthage; eleven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
