James Russell Hampton Obit

James Russell Hampton passed away on Saturday, October 18, 2025, while on vacation with his family. He was 82 years old.

Born in Nashville on October 4, 1943, to Atlas and Mary Eunice Dickenson Hampton, James carried on his family’s proud legacy as owner and operator of Hampton Crane Service from 1977 to 2014. Founded in 1929, Hampton Crane remains Nashville’s oldest and one of its most respected crane and rigging companies, a testament to the integrity and dedication James brought to everything he did.

James was the patriarch of his family-deeply loved, endlessly respected, and cherished by all who had the good fortune to know him. Known for his infectious joy and laughter, he lived life to the fullest. A true adventurer, he traveled the world but always returned to his favorite places-Hawaii, Alaska, Alabama, and his home on Tellico Lake in East Tennessee.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Laura Billings Hampton; his sister, Reita Hampton; along with numerous nephews, nieces, grandnieces, grandnephews, and an extended circle of family and dear friends who will miss him deeply. His Chardonnay pours were as generous as his laughter-something his loved ones will fondly remember.

A gathering of family and friends will be held on Saturday, November 1, 2025, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Phillips-Robinson Funeral Home.
