James “Jimmy, Papa Jim” Robert Midgett, age 87, of Nashville, TN passed away on January 17, 2025.
Jimmy was a lifelong resident of Nashville, born on July 8, 1937, to the late Katherine “Kate” Midgett and William “Willie” Midgett. He was one of eight children, the youngest son in his family.
Jimmy was a graduate of West High School. He proudly served his country in the United States Army and the United States Coast Guard. He worked for Western Electric for many years.
Jimmy was a follower of Jesus Christ. He was an active member of Tusculum Hills Baptist Church. He loved music and served numerous years in the church choir.
He had a deep love for his family and was an avid sports fan. Jimmy played basketball for the US Army while he was stationed in Germany. He played fastpitch softball into his mid-50s, played slow pitch softball until he was 70, and bowled in a local league until the age of 80. He loved the Vanderbilt Commodores and cheered them on at baseball, basketball, and football games. He also proudly supported his sons and grandchildren in their childhood athletic endeavors.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Willette Saums, Richard Midgett, LouEllen Williams, Ann Skinner, Paul Midgett and Fred Midgett.
Left to cherish in his memory are his loving wife, Betty Garnand Midgett; his sons, Mark Midgett (Wendy) and Deron Michael Midgett; his sister, Sandra Carlson; grandchildren, Shannon Houser (Joel), Bradley Midgett (Meghan), and Kenneth Midgett (Kari); great-grandchildren, Karaline Midgett, Kylar Midgett, and Violet Midgett; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends who will miss him dearly.
His funeral service will be held on Monday, January 27, 2025, at 3:00 p.m. at Woodbine Funeral Home – Hickory Chapel, 5852 Nolensville Road, Nashville, TN 37211. The family will receive visitors from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. prior to the funeral service. He will be laid to rest with Military Honors at the Middle Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery on Tuesday, January 28 at 11:00 a.m. https://www.woodbinefuneralhome.com
