James Franklin Cardwell Sr. passed away peacefully on November 11, 2025. He was born on December 4, 1933. James was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who loved life and especially spending time with his family. James served in the US Army from 1956-1958. James was a lifelong resident of Nashville and served his community with the Metro Nashville Police Department from 1961 until he retired in 1983. After retirement he stayed active with the Metro Retirees Association for many years and continued working until just a few years ago.
Preceded in death by wife, Gloria Cardwell; daughter, Darlene Yurt; and parents, Charles and Clara Cardwell. Survived by daughter, Cindy (Troy Whitmer) Cardwell; son, James (Jennifer) Cardwell, Jr.; grandchildren, Mark Yurt, Shaina Cardwell, Jay (Shelby) Cardwell, Ally (Will) Turner and Brittany Hawkins; great-grandchildren, Loria Yurt and Dru Cardwell-Streator.
Funeral services will be conducted on Friday, November 14, 2025, at 1:30 p.m. at Woodbine Funeral Home, Hickory Chapel, 5852 Nolensville Road. Interment with Military Honors at Woodlawn Cemetery.
Visitation will be on Thursday, November 13, 2025, from 3:00 – 7:00 p.m. and on Friday, November 14, 2025, from 12:00 – 1:30 p.m. at Woodbine Funeral Home, Hickory Chapel, 615-331-1952.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
