Hettie A. Gentry was born in Maryville Tennessee in 1930 and moved to Nashville Tennessee around 1936. She and other relatives were part of the group that founded Houston Street Baptist church in 1949. Hettie married Burnice Rubin Gentry in 1949. She was the mother of three girls and four boys. She loved children and never saw a baby that she didn’t want to love. She really, really loved babies. Even the most temperamental baby never missed a feed when Hettie was the feeder. Hettie must have baby set a dozen children over the years.
Hettie loved roses and was very competitive with her aunt regarding who was growing the prettiest roses.
Hettie was a talented poet. She wrote about special people in her life and mostly about how Jesus was the answer to living the happy and contented life. Her poems could make you think, smile and even cry at times. She brought joy with her poetic work.
Above all Hettie Gentry was a Christian that never lost her faith. She was an active member of Tusculum Hills Baptist Church and deeply loved her Church family. She loved the Lord Jesus Christ with all her heart, mind, soul and strength.
Preceded in death by husband, Burnice Gentry; children, Linda Gentry, Shirley Cummins, Sandra Carlton, Ronald Gentry, Robert Gentry and Michael Gentry; and granddaughter, Alexandra Faulk. Survived by son, Glenn (Melba) Gentry; grandchildren, Thomas Cummings, Christie Cummings, Meloney Faulk, John Gentry, Sammy Carlton (Holley) and Clint Gentry (Amberly); great-grandchildren, Jesse Cummings, Chasity Faulk, Hailey Carlton Roberson, Christopher Carlton, Trevor Carlton, Vivian Gentry, Luke Gentry and Eli Gentry.
Funeral services will be conducted by Rev. Paul Gunn on Monday, February 9, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. (visitation 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.) at Woodbine Funeral Home, Hickory Chapel, 5852 Nolensville Road. Interment Woodlawn Cemetery. Family and friends will serve as Pallbearers.
