Herbert Wiesmeyer, aged 92, of Nashville, Tennessee passed away peacefully of natural causes on Friday, October 4, 2024.
He was born on January 12, 1932 in Chicago, Illinois.
He met his wife of 70 Years, Sonia Marie Lawrisuk, in the Farragut High School orchestra. She played bass, he played violin. He earned a PhD in Microbiology Biology from Washington University, St Louis, Missouri in 1960, studying with Arthur Kornberg. He was Professor of Molecular Biology at Vanderbilt University for thirty-seven years.
He preferred being a teacher and mentor/advisor, rather than doing research, although he had a deep, personal interest in cloning plants. He spent many happy hours in his greenhouse with his orchid collection and a similar amount of time in our basement working on various artworks and projects.
After the second of two sabbaticals in Uppsala Sweden, our parents bought a piece of property in Hickman County. They raised vegetables there until the early 2000s when his health forced him to stop. They also hosted an annual Fourth of July party there for many years. It was a high point of the year for many guests, especially children who got to spit watermelon seeds and play in the Piney River Member of Nashville Orchid Society and Nashville Artist Guild. Prolific amateur artist. Enthusiastic musician and gardener.
Survived by his wife, Sonia, and sons, Mark (Lynn Rosemann, his wife) and Roger.
