Harriet McIntyre Hickson, born January 17, 1953 in Thomasville, Georgia to Ida B Mitchell and Robert McIntyre. Harriet was the first grandchild of Rosa and Thomas Mitchell.
At seven years old, Harriet confessed at Saint Mark AME Church her belief in God and Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. The church was stunned when she walked forward during a revival service. Because of her youth, Harriet was questioned why she was coming forth and her response was quick and forceful, “I want to follow Jesus.” She was a faithful member participating in Sunday School, the youth choir, and other activities.
Harriet spent most of her teenage years in Englewood, NJ where she attended Dwight Morrow High School. From there she left to attend college at the University of Dubuque in Dubuque, IA. She later transferred to Montclair State University in New Jersey where she received her Bachelor of Arts with a major in economics.
After graduation, she came to Nashville to give her Aunt Chestina Archibald assistance with her young child. While in Nashville, she got a job at Tennessee State University where she met the love of life, Barry Hickson. This lead to a union of Holy Matrimony at Lee Chapel AME Church on September 24, 1977. From this wonderful union came three fantastic children, Barry Jr., Harlena, and Marcus.
Harriet was a devoted mother and also a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. Throughout a move to Georgia and back to Nashville, the family united with Mt. Zion Baptist Church where Barry serves as Deacon and Harriet as a passionate and dedicated member of the choir and a Deaconess.
Harriet will now transcend on to join that innumerable caravan of ancestors, who preceded her in death and are able, with all the host of heaven, to welcome another beautiful angel. Harriet is now at peace, will never feel pain again, and forever live on in our hearts.
She leaves to cherish her memories a devoted husband Barry Hickson, Sr., children Barry Hickson, Jr., Harlena (Kevin) Banks, Marcus (Ranata) Hickson —– grandchildren……Layla, Alexander, and Riley Hickson, Kamilla and Kamari Banks; one brother Merrick (Edris) Mitchell, nieces Erika and Andrea Mitchell, Prairie, TX., dearest friends Tamara Beamer, Englewood, NJ. and Gail Mitchell, Detroit, MI. and countless other family and friends that she loved and cherished unconditionally.
Visitation Tuesday, August 17, 2021, 12-1:00 p.m. with funeral to follow at Mt. Zion Jefferson Street Location.
