Gwendolyn Althauser Betor, 89, of Greenfield, Indiana, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 22, 2026.
Born in Nashville, Tennessee, to Gladys Tucker Althauser and William Althauser, Gwen lived a life devoted to service, learning, family, and community. She graduated from Mary Washington College and built a meaningful career in elementary education before later serving in nursing home administration, where her compassion and dedication touched many lives.
Gwen was a member of the Church of the Nativity in Indianapolis for 50 years. Her faith, family, and friends were the center of her life.
Following her retirement, Gwen became deeply woven into the civic and cultural life of Greenfield. She was an active and cherished member of numerous organizations, including the Riley Old Home Society, Questors Study Group, Herb Society, League of Women Voters, Greenfield Historic Landmarks, Hearts Bible Study, and local library book groups. She worked for many years as a hostess at the James Whitcomb Riley Home Museum, where she delighted visitors and helped bring beloved traditions to life through events such as the Pixy Tea, Jack-o’-lantern Walk, and Christmas at the Riley Home.
Gwen loved her “fancy drinks” and sharing a meal with family and friends. She was a fiercely independent and strong woman who cared deeply for others.
Gwen will be remembered for her warmth, gracious spirit, intellectual curiosity, and unwavering commitment to her family, friends, and community. Her kindness and enthusiasm enriched the lives of all who knew her.
She is survived by her daughters, Marion (Jon) Baumgarten, Elizabeth (Joe) James, and Julia (Brian) Lowe; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren, all of whom brought her immense joy and pride.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Riley Old Home Society of Greenfield, Indiana, or to the Church of the Nativity in Indianapolis.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, June 13, 2026, at the Church of the Nativity, 7300 Lantern Road, Indianapolis, Indiana, beginning at 1:00 p.m., followed by a memorial service at 2:00 p.m.
