Geraldine Watson, age 88, of Kankakee, Illinois, was born on June 24, 1938, in Nashville, Tennessee, to Reverend Chester and Alice Mosely and passed away on August 4, 2026, in Kankakee, Illinois.
Mother Watson lived a life marked by faith, devotion, and kindness. She was a Christian woman whose gentle spirit and steady presence touched the lives of many. Those who knew her will remember her as faith-filled, loving, and generous, a woman who carried herself with grace and who offered warmth and encouragement to everyone around her. Her life was a reflection of her deep love for God, her family, and the community she served so faithfully.
Mother Watson was a proud graduate of Kankakee High School and later married Vergil Watson, sharing over 30 years together. She also dedicated more than 30 years of service to Shapiro Developmental Center as a Tech 3. Her long career was a testament to her strong work ethic, reliability, and compassion for others.
She was baptized under her father Reverend Chester Mosley and was devoted to her church family. She served as Treasurer of Zion Gate Missionary Baptist Church, where she supported the work of the ministry with commitment and care. She traveled around the United States bringing joy and harmony to everyone she came across as a member of the Buds of Harmony gospel group. During her travels, she sang and worked with celebrity gospel artists including Albertina Walker. Her involvement in the church was an important part of her life, and she valued the fellowship, worship, and service that came with being an active member of her faith community.
Mother Watson found joy in the simple and meaningful things in life. She loved her family deeply and cherished the time they spent together. She enjoyed board games, church activities, and the comfort of home. She will be remembered for her beautiful singing voice, her bright personality, her love of cooking, and her fondness for her social group “The Golden Girls.” Her presence brought laughter, comfort, and a sense of belonging to those fortunate enough to know her. She had a way of making others feel welcome, and her loving nature left a lasting impression on family and friends alike.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Reverend Chester and Alice Mosely; her sister, Annette Davis; her daughters, Sabrina Logan and Alice Vactor; and her grandsons, John Logan Jr. and Jason Logan. Their memories remained close to her heart throughout her life, and she carried their love with her always.
Mother Watson is survived by her son, Michael Watson; her daughter, Marci Watson; her beloved nephew, Julian McNeal; her loving goddaughter, Carolyn Thomas; her grandchildren, Marcell Holder, Rebecca Beland, Joshua Watson, Danielle Watson, Keturah Vactor; her great-grandchildren, Sierra Logan, Christina Bacote, Crystal Bacote, Kamaury Tipsword, Elijah Tipsword, and Harleen Watson; her great-great grandchildren, Ky’Aire Logan, Ka’Lani Logan, and Ka’mani Logan; and other relatives, Pete McNeal, Dwayne McNeal, Stevie McNeal, John Wells Jr., Terry Wells, and Cedric Wells. She also leaves behind a host of extended family members and friends who will forever treasure her memory and the many ways she enriched their lives.
Mother Watson’s life was one of steadfast faith, devoted service, and unconditional love. She will be remembered not only for all she did, but for the spirit with which she did it. Her legacy lives on in the family she loved, the church she served, the work she completed with excellence, and the countless hearts she touched along the way. As Helen Keller once said, “What we have once enjoyed we can never lose. All that we love deeply becomes a part of us.” Geraldine Watson will remain a beloved part of the lives of those who knew and loved her.
