George Stanford Thompson was born July 29, 1934 in Nashville, Tennessee.

He graduated from Hume Fogg High School, where he studied drafting. He attended Vanderbilt University, studying engineering. He earned his architectural license and worked with the Nashville firm of Brush, Hutchison, and Gwinn for 25 years, designing buildings in Nashville/Middle Tennessee and the Southeast, including multiple projects for H. G. Hill Co. and Vanderbilt University. He became a partner in the firm of Hall Thompson and Associates in 1979 and completed his career in the construction industry as Vice President, Director of Marketing with Hardaway Construction Corp., retiring in 2001.

George was highly respected in his profession, and was a member of The American Institute of Architects and Construction Specifications Institute. He particularly enjoyed serving on the board of Tennessee Baptist Adult Homes.

George became a Christian and a member of Grace Baptist Church at the age of 12 in 1946, where he served as a deacon, taught the Glad Hand Sunday School class, and held many committee positions until 1985. He joined Dalewood Baptist Church in 1985, teaching Sunday School and serving as a very active member as long as his health allowed. He was a counselor at the Billy Graham Crusade in 1954. He taught Sunday School for 60 years and was a beloved faith mentor to many many people.

George was a lifelong student, always eager to learn more about a variety of subjects. He enjoyed traveling, and his favorite place to visit was New York City, sharing this love many times with family, friends, and colleagues. From a young age, George was an avid train enthusiast, passed to him by his father. He enjoyed a lifelong love of riding trains, watching trains, and model railroading. At the age of 13, he began running the model railroad layout at Harvey’s Department Store every Christmas for many years. He loved running his trains for fascinated onlookers, and sharing his passion brought joy to many.

George met the love of his life, “that girl Jane,” in 1946, and finally caught her on January 27, 1956. They were deeply devoted to each other, sharing a great adventure with six children for 69 years. Big family gatherings were his favorite events, surrounded by his children and grandchildren.

George is survived by wife, Jane Ellen Smith Thompson; children, Deborah Denise Thompson Thomas (Fred), Robert Stanford Thompson (Karen), Robin Lea Thompson Robertson (Dale), Patti Beth Thompson Richard, Benjamin Lance Thompson, and Timothy Wade Thompson (Shari); and grandchildren, Jennifer Williams Hutchings, Talon Thompson Bell, Cassidy Caitlin Richard, Aston Gabriel Thompson, Jane Ellen Robertson, and Alex Wade Thompson.

Visitation will be held Monday, March 24 from 5 to 8 pm at Forest Lawn Funeral Home at 1150 S Dickerson Rd, Goodlettsville, Tennessee. Additional visitation will be Tuesday, March 25 from 9:30 to 11 am at Grace Baptist Church 1510 Old Hickory Blvd, Nashville, Tennessee, with a Memorial Service to follow. https://www.dignitymemorial.com/obituaries/goodlettsville-tn
