Era “Jean” Hornbuckle, age 89 of Goodlettsville, Tennessee, died Thursday, August 4, 2022 after a long illness.

Jean was born on February 1, 1933 in Pleasant Shade, Tennessee to the late Lucien B. & Effie Mae Hesson.

Her working career began with JC Bradford Company where she soon became the personal assistant to Mr. Bradford himself. Jean and her husband L.D. owned and raced thoroughbred horses all over the country for many years. She handled the administrative end of the horse business and additionally was the office manager for decades for the Hornbuckle Plumbing Company in Nashville.

As a child, Jean sang in a gospel group with her parents and her sister, Dorothy.

Married nearly 75 years, Jean and L.D. met as teenagers the day she saw him walking down her street. He was singing “I’m Sending You a Dozen Roses”. She called out to him “Well I don’t have them yet”. L.D. immediately went to a pawn shop, borrowed $2 and proceeded to buy her 2 dozen roses. As they say – the rest is history.

Jean was active in the Girl Scouts of America, the Springfield Garden Club and the Horseman’s Benevolent Society.

She and L.D. loved Flager Beach, Florida and spent many years there. Jean loved and adored cats – especially her Siamese cat “Spooky”.

Survivors include her husband L.D. Hornbuckle; son, David Hornbuckle, Townsend, TN; daughter, Brenda Lee Frady, Goodlettsville, TN; 2 grandchildren, Christy Lee Stark and Christian Alexander Frady, and 2 great-grandchildren, Caymrn and Shelby Stark.
