Dr. Phillip Gorden passed away peacefully at his home in Nashville, TN on June 23, 2026 at the age of 91.
Born on December 22, 1934 in Tupelo MS, to Morris and Sadie Gorden from Baldwyn, MS, he spent his childhood years in Baldwyn and graduated from Baldwyn High School. Following high school, Dr. Gorden ventured to Nashville, TN where he completed an undergraduate degree from Vanderbilt University, and finished medical school four years later at Vanderbilt as well. After these studies, Dr. Gorden moved to New Haven, CT where he was a resident in Internal Medicine and then a fellow in Endocrinology and Metabolism, both at Yale University. Upon completion of his medical training, Dr Gorden moved to Bethesda MD to join the National Institutes of Health (NIH) where he served in many important roles including clinical fellow, clinical director, senior investigator and finally director of the National Institute of Diabetes, Digestive and Kidney Disease (NIDDK) for 14 years before returning to the clinical research center at NIH. As NIDDK director, Dr. Gorden oversaw the launch of several landmark, multicenter clinical trials that shaped diabetes treatment and management of different forms of diabetes including breakthroughs in lipodystrophy and insulin resistance. Under his leadership, several impactful studies for patients were accomplished including the Diabetes Complications and Control Trial, Modification of Diet in Renal Disease Study and the Diabetes Prevention Based on clinical trials led by Gorden and his team, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved leptin for the treatment of generalized lipodystrophy in 2014. His team also conducted the first radiation therapy for the growth-hormone disorder acromegaly. Including a two-year sabbatical at the University of Geneva, Switzerland to further his research on hormone receptors, Dr. Gorden’s career spanned over 55 years of government service, retiring as a Rear Admiral in 2022. Upon retirement, Dr. Gorden and his wife Vivian moved back to Nashville TN.
Throughout his storied career and life on the East coast, Dr. Gorden maintained a close relationship with friends and family from Northeast MS. He was fond of telling stories of growing up in Baldwyn and visited his hometown often. He is survived by his sons, Lee Gorden, MD (Joan Gorden, MD) and Jed Gorden, MD (Sara Manetti) and his beloved grandchildren, Isaac, Eliana, and Satchel. He was preceeded in death by his wife Vivian, the love of his life for more than six decades, who passed away on June 1st, just weeks earlier.
A graveside funeral service with military honors was held June 26 at The Sherith Israel cemetery in Nashville. Details regarding a celebration of life will be announced at a later date.
