Camilla Sparkman (affectionately known as “Sparky” by her friends) of Old Hickory passed away peacefully on October 29, 2024, after a brief illness.

Camilla grew up in Doyle, Tennessee, graduated from White County High School and earned college and post-graduate degrees from Tennessee Tech and MTSU.

In 1966 Camilla began teaching and coaching in Metro Nashville Public Schools. Coach Sparkman found great joy in teaching sports plays to hundreds of students and athletes from Madison High School and later Hunters Lane High School. In 1976, The Tennessean named her Coach of the Year after taking the Madison Ramettes to the state playoffs. Coach Sparkman celebrated many achievements in her career but what she found most rewarding was mentoring and passing on valuable life lessons to her students.

Camilla was a loyal friend and colleague to her teaching and coaching peers, and she remained a “Yellow Dog” Democrat throughout her life, asking for election updates until the bitter end. If you haven’t already, she would want you to vote on Tuesday (but only if it’s for the right candidate).

In the 1980s she bought a lot on the Caney Fork River in Van Buren County and built a small cabin for her family’s enjoyment. Her parents, Ed and Dahlia Sparkman, spent their retirement there, fishing nearly every day that the weather permitted.

Camilla was predeceased by her parents, her brother Ira Hugh (Bud) Sparkman, and her sister Patricia Martin.

She is survived by her sister, Lyndel (Jerry) Bradshaw of Morrison, Tennessee and eight nieces and nephews. The family wishes to thank her dear friends Vicki Metzgar, and Glen and Pam Smiley.

A celebration of life is planned for a later date. http://taylorsince1909.com
