Anne (Miss Anne) Cunningham Maddux, a 10th generation Nashvillian, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend, went to Heaven May 6th, 2024.

Miss Anne radiated warmth and kindness toward every person she met. Selfless love and devotion defined her personality; one this world will likely never see again.

Born March 31, 1927, to Isaac Walton Cunningham and Annie Gilmore Cunningham, Miss Anne graduated from Isaac Litton High School, attended Stephens College, and graduated from George Peabody College/Vanderbilt. She met her husband Joe, also a student at Vanderbilt, and they married on June 4, 1949. Theirs was a second level love, a forever love—steady, constant, trusting, loyal, respectful, and faithful.

Miss Anne acknowledged that she lived a beautiful life and was grateful for all her blessings. She had many friends, enjoyed golf and dinners at Hillwood Country Club, loved playing bridge, attending events at The Centennial Club, and volunteering with The Ladies of Charity. She loved her Florida home at Sandestin in Miramar Beach that she and Joe purchased in 1974.

A strong Catholic faith sustained her through the hardships of losing her oldest daughter, and three premature babies, as well as supporting and nurturing a child with a near-fatal injury and disability. Mr. and Mrs. Maddux were founding members of St. Henry Catholic Church and Resurrection Catholic Church in Miramar Beach, FL and were faithful daily Mass attendees at the Eternal Word Television Network. Bolin Stumb and an army of angels brought her the Eucharist, hope, prayers, and a gentle smile every day. Words cannot express the gift that was to her.

Miss Anne is preceded in death by a daughter, Peggy Maddux Southard, three premature babies, two brothers, Bud and John Cunningham, a sister, Mary Catherine Ford and a brother-in-law, Paul Maddux.

She is survived by her husband of nearly 75 years, Joseph Orville Maddux, daughters Mary Beth (Harry) Shields, Sara Lee (Caswell) Cheshire, sons Stuart (Lisa) Southard, Joseph Jr., and John (Selina) Maddux. Thirteen grandchildren: Shannon (Tommy) Harris, Sara Beth (Andy) Cline, Sloane (Emily) Southard, Whitney (Taylor) Sorensen, Harrison (Susie) Shields, Corby (Rachel) Shields, John Paul (Tara) Shields, Annie (Trent) Sorensen, Catie (David) Haensler, Elizabeth Cheshire, Jeanne (Bryan) Jenkins, Emily (Andrew) Jarrett, and Patrick (Nez) Maddux. Thirty great-grandchildren: Rylan, Levi, Ty, & Quinn Harris, Anne Clare, Ella, & Judah Cline, Wendy Southard, Arie, Boone, & Lars Sorensen, Hank, Reese, Barnes, & Delsie Shields, Sawyer & Mason Shields, Wilhelmina, Francis, & Heidi Sorensen, Maggie Jane & Clyde Haensler, Dylan & Ryder Matekovich, William, Matthew, & Charlee Jenkins, Elsie & Sylvie Jarret, and John Luca Maddux. Brothers and sisters-in-law, Betty Holt, Buddy & Alana Maddux, and Mary Ann Maddux, all of whom she loved as both friends and family.

She was especially grateful for the gentle care and love she received from Bessie Hunter, Becky Ingle, Erin Gambrell, Evelyn Allen and Sagi Garcia.

Services will be held Tuesday, May 14, at St. Henry’s Catholic Church, 6401 Harding Pike, Nashville. Visitation begins at 10 AM followed by Mass at 11 AM. Interment will immediately follow the service at Calvary Cemetery, 1001 Lebanon Pike, Nashville. https://www.dignitymemorial.com/obituaries/nashville-tn
