Alice Ann Floyd Barge passed away peacefully on November 2, 2025, at the age of 98. Born on May 20, 1927, in Pulaski, Tennessee, she was the daughter of Carson Franklin and Sarah Campbell Vaughan. She moved to Nashville at age 10 and attended Eakin Elementary, Calvert Middle School, and Hillsboro High School before graduating from Ward Belmont in 1944.

Alice Ann attended Vanderbilt University, graduating in 1948 with a degree in Mathematics, and later completed post-graduate coursework in Education at George Peabody College and Tennessee State University. It was also at Vanderbilt that she met the love of her life, William Oliver Floyd, Jr. The two married on November 23, 1950, and began a life of devotion to family, faith, and community.

She was a faithful member of First Presbyterian Church for over 70 years, where she worshipped, served, and nurtured lifelong friendships rooted in her deep Christian faith.

While raising four children, Alice Ann began a long and meaningful teaching career, touching the lives of countless students at Richland Elementary, Julia Green, Hillwood Presbyterian Preschool, St. George’s, and finally at the Oak Hill School.

She was an active member of many organizations, including the Singing Hills Garden Club, Daughters of the American Revolution, Centennial Club, Ladies’ Hermitage Association, and Ward Belmont Alumnae Advisory Committee.

Alice Ann was deeply passionate about nature and conservation. She dedicated three decades to the Horticultural Society of Middle Tennessee, serving as President from 1993 to 1995. She chaired the beloved Trees of Christmas in 1989 and later the Society’s 75th Anniversary Tour of Gardens in 2006. In recognition of her longstanding service, she was scheduled to receive the Horticultural Society’s Award of Merit later this month.

She was also instrumental in the establishment of the Metropolitan Tree Board in 1985 and served on the Nashville Tree Foundation from its inception in 1986. In 2009, her lifelong dedication to trees and conservation was honored nationally when President Barack Obama awarded her the prestigious President’s Call to Service Award.
