Alfred Neal Raby passed away surrounded by loved ones on June 5, 2025. The son of Charles W. Raby and Ruby Fitzpatrick Raby, he is survived by his life partner, Patsy Nahay, his daughter, Stephanie Raby, his brother, Bill Raby, and many other beloved family members.
A gifted and passionate visionary, Al contributed to the sustainability, beauty and functionality of many communities as an urban planner. He was associated with Mid-Cumberland Council of Governments, Hart Freeland Roberts, and he established RM Plan Group. He led projects in Nashville at Belmont University, Trevecca Nazarene University, Nashville Auto Diesel College, and the City of Brentwood. Beyond Nashville, he planned and executed projects in Chattanooga, Tennessee; Tupelo, Mississippi; Stillwater, Oklahoma; Fayetteville, Arkansas; and Louisville, Kentucky. Al was a proud graduate of East High School in Nashville. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Peabody College and a Master of Science in Planning from the University of Tennessee.
Al was defined by his zest for life and love of family and friends, who could always count on him to support, encourage, and celebrate their interests and pursuits. His yearly trip to Florida created memories for generations. A passionate sports fan who loved art, music, history, and design, Al was a world traveler and a connoisseur of food and craft beers.
A weekly Irish pub happy hour was the tradition through which he celebrated his joy in living. Al’s life will be celebrated with a beach-themed happy hour at the Crow’s Nest, 2221 Bandywood Drive, Nashville, at 4:30 p.m., Saturday, June 14th.
