The motorcyclist fatally injured Sunday afternoon in a collision with a car on 21st Avenue South at Portland Avenue is identified as Aaron Rumford, 29, of Nashville, an off-duty member of the Tennessee Highway Patrol.

The investigation shows that Rumford was traveling south on 21st Avenue from the Hillsboro Village area on his Yamaha motorcycle at 4:35 p.m. when he struck a northbound Audi Q3 that was turning onto Portland Avenue. Rumford was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he died. The driver of the Audi, Alexandria Sherman, 20, of Nashville, was not injured.

There were no indications of alcohol or drug involvement at the scene. The preliminary contributing factor appears to have been excessive speed on the part of Rumford. The investigation is continuing.
