Roberto Viera-Aybar, 28, has now been booked on charges of aggravated burglary, assaulting a police officer and vandalism after he forced his way into a home in the 3700 block of Hamilton Church Road early Monday morning.

The homeowner/victim called police at 4:30 a.m. to report that a man had broken in through the back door. He and a second person in the house hid until police arrived to safely escort them outside. Meanwhile, Viera-Aybar went into a bedroom on the second floor and shut the door.

For more than an hour, officers gave repeated verbal commands for Viera-Aybar to surrender himself, but he refused. He then began to vandalize the bedroom, breaking out the window, and throwing furniture outside. He lit items on fire and tossed those out the window yelling, “there’s a fire and I can’t breathe”. Viera-Aybar ultimately jumped out of the window, landing on the victim’s car. Officers took him into custody. Nashville Fire Department personnel were on the scene and extinguished the blaze.

Viera-Aybar’s bond is set at $75,000.
