A registered ex-con with multiple convictions for drug offenses is charged with attempted criminal homicide after he fired on an MNPD TITANS Unit detective Friday afternoon in a cul-de-sac on Skip Jack Drive.

The detective was on break and sitting in his unmarked police vehicle when Otis Beach, 52, pulled up beside him in a Hyundai Genesis. Beach yelled at the detective, who wore plain-clothes, and pointed a handgun in his direction. The officer quickly drove off to create distance between the two vehicles. Beach fired three rounds, striking the officer’s car. Fortunately, the detective was not injured.

Other detectives in the area were able to quickly locate Beach at his residence in the 200 block of Centreboard Court where he was taken into custody. A 9-millimeter handgun was recovered as well as a cartridge casing from inside the Hyundai. Two additional cartridge casings were recovered at the scene of the shooting. Beach admitted that he fired the shots but said he was unaware that the victim was a police officer.

During a subsequent execution of a search warrant at Beach’s Centreboard Court residence, detectives recovered an additional four handguns, 3.4 pounds of marijuana, 33.55 pounds of fentanyl, 4.73 pounds of cocaine, seven M30 pills, two kilo presses, multiple blenders, vacuum sealers, digital scales, and $51,563 cash. Five vehicles, two televisions, 340 pairs of luxury shoes, and luxury watches/jewelry were also seized from the residence.

Additional charges are pending against Beach, who was on a 10-year suspended sentence for a felony firearm charge. ATF was also contacted and issued a complaint for the federal firearms offenses. He remains jailed on $300,000 bond.

The TITANS Unit was greatly assisted by all MNPD personnel who responded/assisted in this investigation and our federal partners, including the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas (HIDTA) task force.
