One person was killed and several others injured in a shooting that occurred on Jefferson Street near TSU on Saturday, October 12. Metro Nashville Police responded to the 2600 block of Jefferson Street just after 5 p.m. on Saturday, reports FOX17. TSU’s homecoming game kicked off at 5pm at Nissan Stadium. TSU held its homecoming parade earlier that morning.
Homicide Unit detectives, in coordination with Specialized Investigations Division detectives, are pursuing strong leads to identify all of the shooters involved in Saturday evening’s gunfire on Jefferson Street at 27th Avenue North. Among the 10 people injured, the man fatally wounded has been identified as Vonquae Johnson, 24.
The investigation to this point indicates two groups fired at each other from a parking lot and the street.
While the motive remains unclear at this time, two of those injured are suspected to have been involved in the shooting. Both refused to be interviewed at the hospital.
Five of the injured were transported by the Nashville Fire Department to area hospitals. Five others were brought to hospitals by private vehicles.
Johnson died at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
“MNPD officials clarified the shooting is not a reflection of TSU itself, but a disturbance to what should have been an enjoyable celebration amid TSU’s homecoming weekend,” reports WKRN.
