Earl Swensson, Architect for Batman Building, Has Died

Native Nashvillian, Earl Swensson has died.

Swenson was 91. While the name might not sound familiar his projects contribute to Nashville’s skyline and his iconic designs are memorable. From the Batman building (AT&T building) downtown, Wildhorse Salon, Opryland Hotel, and Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt.

In 1961, he founded Earl Swensson Associates, Inc. (now ESa) from the kitchen of his home in the West Meade area of Nashville with his wife Sue as his first employee, stated his obituary. Swensson retired in 2010, Earl Swensson Associates had grown from a four-person office to be one of the largest architecture/design firms in Tennessee which is both nationally and internationally recognized in the areas of hospitality, education, and healthcare.

Swensson is survived by his sister, Lazelle Atkinson; children, Krista Swensson Hogan (Mark) and Kurt D. Swensson (Frances); 7 grandchildren, and 6 great-granddaughters. He is predeceased by his wife of 68 years, Suzanne D. Swensson; daughter, Lin D. Swensson; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Earl E. Swensson; and brother, Sigurd S. Swensson.

A private service will be held for the immediate family. A Celebration of Life is planned for the spring.
